The Simple Beauty of Lyrical Dance

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. It is the one dance that almost defies definition. Lyrical dancing is when a dancer takes on the role of an actor and tells a story through technique and emotion. Dancers don’t express how they’re feeling with voice, but rather, facial expressions and body dynamics. You become the story through the dancing. This type of dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion as an artistic form of expression.

You may be familiar with Lyrical and Contemporary dance, as it has risen in popularity through television shows like So You Think You Can Dance and choreographers like Mia Michaels, She has worked with musical artists such as Celine Dion, Tom Cruise, Gloria Estefan and Prince. In 2005 she choreographed Cirque du Soleil's world tour, "Delirium" as well as Celine Dion's Las Vegas show "A New Day" for which she was later nominated for Emmy.

The dancers of KaliAndrews Dance Company are the proud winners of a Diamond Award for their lyrical performance at Shine Dance 2011 Nationals. Watch these beautiful dancers move in the video below:

Another beautiful performance came at KADC's annual recital. Watch here as Leah performs her Graduation Solo:
